In a resolute display of solidarity and leadership, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday pledged renewed commitment to the welfare of workers across the state, even as thousands defied a heavy downpour to mark the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

Speaking against the backdrop of growing economic challenges and the soaring cost of living, the governor acknowledged the resilience of workers and assured that their demands, articulated through the labour unions, had not fallen on deaf ears.

“I have listened to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC); I understand your demands, I have adopted your speeches and we will continue to work as partners in progress,” Sanwo-Olu said.

With this year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming the Civic Space in Midst of Economic Hardship’, the celebration took on a deeper tone, echoing workers’ frustrations while also spotlighting their tenacity. Sanwo-Olu seized the occasion to reassert his administration’s plan to build a more robust public service.

“Workers’ take-home will be enough to take them home our goal is to ensure that,” he assured. “We will continue to work on infrastructure that will make the lives of worker better.”

He also commended the workforce for their resilience: “I thank you all for defying the rain and coming out to celebrate yourselves. You all deserve to be celebrated. Thank you for being an integral part of our government, I salute you all.”

The governor announced that next year’s May Day event would be relocated to Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, to accommodate the growing crowd.

Despite the rainfall, union members participated in a vibrant march past, adorned in colourful ankara, T-shirts, and caps.

Also present at the rally were the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr Afolabi Ayantayo, and the Head of Service, Mr Bode Agoro, both of whom hailed Lagos workers for their dedication and professionalism.

They reiterated the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve staff welfare, including initiatives aimed at creating a more conducive and productive working environment.
