President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security through continuous investment in modern military assets and cutting-edge technologies.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu made the pledge yesterday at the commissioning of two Agusta A-109S Trekker Power Attack Helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fleet, at the Presidential Air Fleet Apron, Abuja. The event was part of activities marking the 61st anniversary of the NAF.
The President assured that the federal government would provide the armed forces with the necessary tools to confront insecurity in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
“We will continue to invest in advanced defence technologies and ensure our forces are fully equipped to tackle both conventional and asymmetric threats,” Tinubu stated.
He noted that the newly inducted helicopters, alongside recent acquisitions including the Diamond-62 surveillance aircraft, T-129 ATAK helicopters, and King Air 360i, would bolster the Air Force’s capabilities in combating terrorism, insurgency, and other security threats, despite fiscal challenges.
“These acquisitions underscore our unwavering dedication to safeguarding our nation. They will enhance the NAF’s operational reach across Nigeria and the sub-region,” Tinubu said.
He added that improved air power remains central to his administration’s goal of fostering a secure and stable environment to attract investment and stimulate economic growth.
“National security is the anchor of our Renewed Hope Agenda. Peace and stability are the bedrock of prosperity. Our military’s resilience is key to restoring public confidence,” he stressed.
The President also urged the Air Force to maintain operational readiness, discipline, and equipment maintenance to maximize the utility of the new assets.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, described the helicopter induction as a demonstration of the government’s steadfast support for the armed forces, noting the aircraft’s versatility for combat, training, and emergency missions.
He underscored the need for a flexible and responsive Air Force capable of adapting to Nigeria’s evolving security landscape.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including Senator Austin Akobundu, Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Air Force; Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; among others.
