The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Government and security agencies, began a three-day clean-up and sensitisation exercise at Lagos port corridors.

NPA Managing Director, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, announced the initiative on Friday during the launch of the operation, tagged ‘NPA Security Clearance Operations 2025’.

He stated the exercise was designed to address challenges disrupting smooth port operations and enhance overall port functionality.

Represented by NPA’s General Manager, Security, Mr Anthony Edosomwan, Dantsoho said the clean-up would foster greater efficiency and future growth for Nigerian ports.

He added that the goal was to clear congestion, eliminate security threats, and reduce environmental hazards affecting the ports over time.

Dantsoho outlined that the operation spans all entry routes to Tin Can Island, Apapa port, Kirikiri Lighter Terminals I & II, and their surroundings.

He stressed the importance of removing criminal elements, shanties, kiosks, abandoned equipment, and containers obstructing traffic and endangering port users.

The initiative aligns with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code developed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for global port safety.

He noted that port access roads are vital international corridors and economic gateways, requiring collaboration to maintain order and security.

According to Dantsoho, the clean-up will improve port safety and security, while supporting Nigeria’s economic development and growth.

He said persistent congestion and delays at ports negatively impact trade and contribute to a decline in national GDP.

The three-day clean-up, he added, is essential for the overall success of this initiative and long-term port improvement.

Dantsoho explained that NPA’s security division had earlier engaged in public awareness campaigns across print and electronic media platforms.

This effort aimed to gain support and cooperation from all stakeholders, including traders, residents, and port users in affected areas.

He reiterated NPA’s commitment to environmental sustainability and a safer, cleaner port environment across all Nigerian port facilities.

Dantsoho warned that pollution and encroachment continue to pose serious risks to port operations and nearby communities.

He said the clean-up benefits not only port activities but also improves environmental conditions for surrounding areas.

He added that “NPA Security Clearance Operations 2025” is part of wider efforts to ease congestion and ensure sustainable port management.

Dantsoho urged all stakeholders to support the initiative for a safer, secure, and environmentally-friendly port system in Nigeria.
