Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has hailed Nigerian workers as the "indomitable engine" driving the nation toward its long-desired prosperity.

In a statement issued in observance of this year’s Workers’ Day, Atiku commended the unwavering dedication and sacrifices of Nigerian workers, emphasizing that their resilience is the cornerstone of national progress.

He stressed that the true meaning of Workers’ Day can only be achieved when both government and private sector leaders prioritize the welfare of workers in their policies and actions.

Atiku pointed out that the state of the workforce reflects the health of a nation’s economy, serving as a clear indicator of socio-economic well-being. "Despite enduring severe hardships and minimal compensation, Nigerian workers continue to shoulder the burdens of our economic aspirations with quiet heroism," he said.

"However, it is disheartening that those in positions of power have not reciprocated this steadfast commitment with concrete support and justice."

The former Vice President expressed his concern that, in the face of ongoing economic challenges, the current government has failed to introduce substantial relief measures to alleviate the plight of workers.

Atiku urged labor unions to persist in their efforts for good governance, describing their advocacy as a critical safeguard for the average Nigerian.

He reiterated that their voices must remain strong, calling for accountability, transparency, and fairness.

He also highlighted that the observance of International Workers’ Day is not just a celebration but a solemn tribute to the hard work and spirit of workers.

Atiku called for the embodiment of the day's true meaning through increased productivity, renewed patriotism, and a deep respect for labor.

He called on all levels of government to safeguard workers' rights, emphasizing that these rights should be inviolable and carefully protected.

"The labor force is the soul of our nation," Atiku affirmed.

"It represents both the face and the force of the people. Therefore, it is crucial that governments and employers put in place strong protections to preserve the dignity, rights, and entitlements of workers."

In conclusion, Atiku urged policymakers to draw inspiration from the theme of this year’s Workers’ Day, "Social Justice and Decent Work. Safety and Health of Workers," and to recognize the labor force not just as a tool, but as an equal partner in the nation's journey toward greatness.
